BCMM Unveils Microbial Wonders at BASF
Rain couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm at the Bay Area Science Festival (BASF) on October 25, 2025, where the Benioff Center for Microbiome Medicine (BCMM) booth drew over 500 visitors eager to explore the fascinating world of microbes. Focusing on the healthy human microbiome and foods made with or containing microbes, the booth showcased petri dishes filled with diverse microbial cultures that captivated attendees of all ages.
For younger visitors, interactive activities like “Benny the Dog” and microbe-inspired coloring pages offered a fun way to learn about microbes living on Benny’s body and their role in health. Custom-designed Pokémon-style cards featuring microbes and immune cells were a huge hit, sparking excitement and curiosity among both kids and adults.
The human microbiome exhibit proved especially popular, giving attendees a glimpse into the microscopic organisms that shape our health and environment. Visitors left with their curiosity sparked and a deeper appreciation for the invisible world around them. Through hands-on activities and engaging displays, BCMM’s booth highlighted the vital role microbes play in everyday life, leaving a lasting impression on the festival attendees.
