The BCMM offers up to $1,000 to help trainees and research staff attend external (non-UCSF) microbiome-focused conference, workshop, or other training or professional development events. This funding is for future events only - past events will not qualify. Both virtual and in-person external (non-UCSF) events are eligible, but in-person events will be prioritized to enable professional networking opportunities. BCMM especially wants to support those who are new to microbiome research as well as those that are presenting at professional conferences.

Eligibility

Applicants that meet the following criteria will be prioritized for funding:

  • Are a BCMM member (active or membership pending).
  • Have at least one ongoing project where microbiome research is a primary focus.
  • Hold an active UCSF appointment as a trainee (any level) or research staff.
  • Have not received a Trainee or Staff Travel Award within the last 12 months.

UCSF and the BCMM do not use race, gender, sex, or other protected categories - or proxies for protected categories - in the selection process.

Deadlines

Applications are reviewed four times a year. The upcoming deadlines are:

  • January 22, 2026
  • April 23, 2026
  • August 20, 2026

Awards will be announced 1-2 weeks after each deadline. Funds will be reimbursed after the training is completed.
