The next session will take place Thursday, October 14th, from 4:10-5pm.

For this session, we will discuss Killing Rage, Ending Racism by Bell Hooks.

Here are the guiding questions:

  1. “I Had been raised to dream only of racial uplift, of a day when white and black would live together as one” (pp. 15). How is this idea of “racial uplift” both promising but also harmful?
  2. “It is usually materially privileged white women who identify as feminists, and who have gained greater social equality and power with white men in the existing social structure…who resist most vehemently the revolutionary feminist insistence that an anti-racist agenda must be at the core of our movement if there is ever to be solidarity between women and effective coalitions that cross racial boundaries and unite us in common struggle” (pp. 101). What is your understanding of this quote? How is this an example of the Kimberlé Crenshaw’s term intersectionality?
  3. The way Blackness is marketed is crucial in understanding how Black life is perceived. What are some examples of how Blackness is marketed?
