Steven D. Pletcher, MD, is a Professor of Clinical Otolaryngology and he is the Director of the Residency Program in the Department of Otolaryngolgy – Head and Neck Surgery (OHNS) at the University of California, San Francisco. After graduating with honors from Yale College, he received his medical degree from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine. Dr. Pletcher completed his OHNS residency from UCSF, followed by a Rhinology fellowship from the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston.

The Pollard lab develops statistical and computational methods for the analysis of massive biomedical datasets. Our research focuses on emerging technologies for genomics, mass spectrometry, and imaging. We specialize in evolutionary and comparative approaches, including machine-learning integration of diverse types of data and longitudinal models of dynamics in disease and development. Examples of current projects are massively parallel dissection of regulatory networks and decoding cryptic variation in the human microbiome.

Sima Porten, MD, MPH

Dr. Sima Porten is a specialist in cancers of the genital and urinary organs. She is a member of the urologic oncology team at the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. Her clinical interests include the diagnosis and treatment of genitourinary cancer, particularly bladder cancer, upper tract urothelial cancer, kidney cancer and high-risk prostate cancer.

The goal of my research is to identify factors that influence the initiation of effective immune responses to HBV in the liver. Currently, my focus is on understanding the role of the liver as a site of immune priming to hepatotropic pathogens and the influence of commensal bacteria on the liver priming environment. I am also very interested visualizing of immune structures in the liver by immunofluorescent staining of liver tissue.
